Dining out Sunday, Apr 22 2012

This past week was all about dining out. As I type this I am sitting in a restaurant grabbing a light lunch.

I went to Heart & Soy on Bardstown road and got my favorite yellow curry soup and a side of jicama rolls. The picture does not do the soup justice.

That is tofu chocolate peanut butter pie. So good.

I also went to the sister restaurant Roots for the first time:
I got tea

Jicama salad which was so good.

Crispy avocado and tomato rolls

Thursday was another first time for me at the restaurant Dragon King’s Daughter

I got edamame and 2 sushi rolls. Followed by dessert at Sweet Surrender.

After today I will be dining in-well for a few days anyways 🙂

Coming to an End Saturday, Apr 14 2012

Well spring break is coming to an end. It is back to work for me on Monday. I have thoroughly enjoyed my break and although work will be crazy by the time Monday comes I will have only a little over a month left until summer break. This first year as a professional and not student has flown by!

I made sure to end spring break in a fun way by taking a quick road trip to see friends in Lexington.

Friday night I made the drive up (I actually enjoy the drive-it goes by fast and brings back so many memories).

Everyone met at Outback Steakhouse for dinner. I ordered the chicken and Swiss sandwich with sweet potato fries. I am obsessed with sweet potato fries and ate all of them on my plate. The chicken sandwich had 2 bites out of it before I gave it away.

Next up was going out to watch a friend’s band play. I got to play catch up with some great people I don’t get to see often.

8 hours (!) of sleep later we went to one of my favorite places to eat in Lexington. I muss this place so much!

They had some of my favorites: tofu “egg” salad and Bombay tofu salad. I also tried a new dish from the cold bar: orzo with curry and coconut.

On the side I got my favorite smoothie. They don’t use ice so it is very thick. This one is just strawberries, banana, and Soymilk

Once I got back home to Louisville I enjoyed dessert

Other food I have been enjoying:

I also made this rice dish for lunches at school this week and to empty some of the fridge. It had wild rice, pasta sauce, white beans, Brussels spouts, and roasted red peppers

Oh Yes I Did Wednesday, Apr 11 2012

I went back to Hillbilly Tea today for lunch with my mom. Yes I went there on Monday for lunch and today is only Wednesday. My family had 2 living social deals that were set to expire at the end if the month. I bought one and my parents had bought one. My meal on Monday was so good that I got the exact same thing.

My mom got the smoked chicken salad. She was the adventurous foodie one by trying something different.

Hillbilly Tea Lunch Tuesday, Apr 10 2012

I have been to Hillbilly Tea once before for breakfast. Yesterday my mom and I went for lunch. I was just as impressed this time as I was on my last visit. The menu is varied and creative as well as offering meat and vegan items. This place is seriously a gem. I can’t wait to bring friends here. One thing to note is that there is on street parking. If it is during the day or afternoon, make sure you have change for the meters.

I ordered the vegan burger and had cheese and bacon added to it. For my side I got roasted sweet potatoes.

It came with a barbecue type sauce but the burger was perfect as is and so I didn’t use any.

For dessert I got some type of moon pie cookie thing. Pardon my lack of appropriate descriptors.

So Much Fun Tuesday, Apr 10 2012

I have been having so much fun lately and have been enjoying my spring break.

What I have been up to:

1) I caught up with a friend at 60 West over martinis. We were there for 4 hours and I tried 3 different flavors. My favorite one tasted like a slightly sweet lemonade. Good food and dessert was shared.
2) I have discovered peanut butter on toast with maple syrup is delicious.

3) I got a new cookbook for $16

4) I visited my favorite coffee shop in Lexington, Common Grounds, where I spent many hours over my 6 years in Lexington

5) Smoked salmon cream cheese is a good topper for bagels

6) I am not a fan if milkshakes but fancy coffee drinks are right up my ally

7) I ate at The Pub when I was in Lexington to celebrate my friend’s birthday. Unfortunately they don’t have sweet potato fries anymore.
8) Tomorrow I am going to try and convince myself to do stuff for work…any suggestions to help my motivation over break?

The Grape Leaf Tuesday, Apr 10 2012

On Saturday I had an appointment to get my haircut. It was a beautiful day and by the time I finished at the salon it was 1:00pm-enter lunch. Since it was so beautiful out I knew I wanted a restaurant where I could sit outside. I decided on The Grape Leaf because it met the first criteria and I have also been wanting to try it for a while. I’m so glad I did. I had delicious food and spent some quality time with myself. In the past, I never went to a sit down resting when dining alone but I actually enjoy it now.

I ordered the spanakopita that came with yogurt sauce. Props to the restaurant for offering half orders. For my entree I ordered the Spanish Burrito with chicken and chose a Greek salad to accompany it.

Baklava was dessert. One was pistachio the other was walnut.

Cheering for the Cats Tuesday, Apr 10 2012

This is obviously going back in time a bit to the night of the NCAA championship game. Being a UK grad (twice actually- I received both my bachelors and masters degree from there) I was thrilled with the end result of the game. Since I knew my evening would be filled with multitasking- both watching the game and completing paperwork I picked up dinner at one of my favorite restaurants Zen Garden. The restaurant has been in existence for a while but I had not tried it until this year. It is also an all vegetarian restaurant but I’m positive almost any meat eater could find multiple dishes they would want to try. The orange tofu is a favorite of mine. I’m a tofu lover but told my mom that I think even those who get squeamish when they hear tofu would live this dish.

I got the orange tofu, spring rolls, and a veggie sushi rolls.

Shakertown Tuesday, Apr 10 2012

Today’s daytrip was to a place near and dear to my heart. My family has been going to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill ( I refer to it as Shakertown) for a long time. Sometimes we go just to walk around, ride on the ferry, eat, and have even stayed overnight. It is so peaceful and makes me feel all warm inside. We ate lunch there today and of course I got the tomato celery soup. This is a Traditional Shaker recipe and is a must if you go there. If your in the area or just want to learn of the history check out their site here.
Here are some pictures from today.
